• Environment and health: the centrality of sperm

For years, we wonder if there is a link between environmental pollution and human health. Several studies have been done in Italy and in Europe, and from them, it was found that the sperm appear to be tools for the evaluation of elective noxae environmental and food on the future of public health. In fact it is possible to quantify the levels of environmental pollution in the seminal plasma and, simultaneously, to verify the in vivo effects on sperm cells. The high number of cells , easily available , with characteristics sensitive to environmental pollutions , such as motility , morphology and integrity of the DNA strand, make sperm elective bioindicators of environmental damage . It must be said then that the sperm DNA fragmentation index is a parameter independent of the others : there is a population of patients who, despite having normal semen parameters , have an increased percentage of sperm with damaged DNA . Some scientific studies have shown that the environmental impact on human fertility is also apparent by observing how , especially in the territories polluted , immigrants - from countries with high fertility rates - have undergone any change in semen parameters and , more generally , the procreative difficulties.
